Disturbed by some of the events surrounding the 2008 presidential election and the loud voices claiming to speak for all of us I came home to Vermont to find out if our democracy was alive and well. Town clerks in small towns in Vermont are the right people to talk to about the state of our democracy.

In Vermont the clerks are the neighborhood watchers of the most cherished expression of our freedom – elections. They are our firewall against abuses. I visited 19 women clerks in small towns in Vermont. I asked them about the health of our democracy and what was threatening it. Women Town Clerks of Vermont -- Reflections on Democracy is what they said to me about democracy in small towns and the threats against it.
